In recent years, gold has brought the fields of advanced electronics and medicine closer together, creating a wide range of applications at the forefront of the healthcare revolution. In the 2000s, a range of ‘stretchable electronics’ were developed using gold wires a few hundred nanometres thick and applying them to stretchable polymers. Among other emergent technologies, the circuits’ flexibility has expanded the potential for implantable electronics that can monitor patients’ vital signs and warn of potential health problems.
