While many investors view gold primarily as a safe-haven asset, gold’s investment attributes extend beyond risk mitigation. According to data from LBMA, the price of gold in US dollars has increased by an average of 11% a year as of 31 December 2020 since the US lifted the Gold Standard in 1971. That’s comparable to US stocks over the same period, while outperforming US bonds. Taken over the last 20 years, gold has had periods of outperforming both US stocks and US bonds during strong ‘risk-on’ markets.
