The gold-backed exchange-traded fund (ETF) debuted on the New York Stock Exchange on November 18, 2004. SPDR Gold Shares® or GLD® saw inflows of over $1 billion in the first few days. By August 2011, as gold prices hit a record high, GLD briefly became the world’s biggest ETF, surpassing the SPDR S&P 500® Trust ETF in value.
Eleven additional gold-backed ETFs have since been launched in the US, with more than 90 active gold-backed ETFs and similar fund structures listed in various exchanges around the world as of 30 June 2021.
